Research
Teaser Trailer: a teaser trailer, or just teaser, is a short trailer used to advertise an upcoming film
Before I started to produce my own trailer, I researched the following trailers from different genres. This was to help me find some initial inspiration to decide which genre to do for my own, and to also learn the conventions of a trailer. The following trailers I looked at are from comdey, action, horror, western, gangster, drama and sci fi.The range of trailers gave me an idea of how different genres follow different conventions in order to draw in their target audiences.
Comedy: SuperbadSuperbad comes under the genre of Comedy. The narrative follows two teenage boys trying to obtain some liquor for a house party however their actions lead them taking part in unexpected humerous events; this storyline is appealing as it is relatable to my age group. This trailer is suited to it's genre; for example the upbeat music sets a light hearted mood. The two main actors Jonah Hill and Michael Cera are also relatable to a young adult/ teen audience. Throughout the film the pace is upbeat and quick, this is due to the quick cuts of close ups, mid shots, long shots and point of view shots. This is effective as it gives us glimpses of the comical events the two characters get up too. The dialogue is effective as they use adult languae for comic effect, this is targeted to their older audience and is used to make the audience laugh. The credits show the production company, previous films, actors annd the title of film these are effective as they crosscut to bright orange, yellows and blue font which connotes to the audience a happy mood.

Horror/Thriller: The PurgeThe Purge is a Horror/Thriller based on the narrative that all crime is legal in the US for 12 hours, one family get's held hostage for helping someone elses target. This trailer appeals to young adults, the rating is 15, therefore this allows more gore and horror. This trailer is appealing due to the establishing shots, it shows the contrast between the day and night when all crime is legal. This is effective as it makes the audience fear the night, which is a typical convention of horror films. A range of shots are used including close ups, this shows the reactions of the characters and builds up the suspense in the trailer. It starts off fairly slow pace using dissolves, this shows an insight of the middle class family. Then the pace changes as soon as the family are put in danger, this is efffective as it makes the trailer alot more dramatic. To follow this the music used is a loud alarm this gives the trailer a warning sign suggesting to the audience this film is horrific. The credits are also effective as they give an insight of the storyline, this gives the audience a vague idea of the narrative. Furthermore, the dialogue also makes the opening alot more dramatic, quotes such as 'Nothing is ever going to be ok' suggests to the audience alot is going to happen to this family.

Sci Fi: Star Trek Into DarknessStar Trek into the darkness is a sequel from Star Trek. It is a Sci Fi based around a crew on an aircraft, including famous characters Captain Kirk. This trailer is targeted to a wide audience including young adults and older, it's dominant audience are Star Trek fans also known as Trekkers. This trailer is effective as we see it is set in an unfamiliar setting due to the establishing shots, this fits well within the Sci Fi genre as it shows the audience a different environment. A slow pace is used this is effective as it shows slow dissolves from one scene to another revealing the air craft, this shows the audience it is set in space. The slow dissolves also reveal parts of the story to the audience, this is effective as it is a sequel therefore it gives the audience a reminder of what has happened; the font is in blue and silver which could connote engineer and mechanics, this makes the font look masculine and suits the Sci Fi genre. As more action kicks in a quicker cuts are used which speed up the pace; the music used is dramatic, this is effective as it builds up suspense in the trailer, special effects such as explosions and spaceships are used which show the film contains action and is a high budget too. The voiceover used is effective 'I believe in you Jim' this gives the audience an idea of the close relationships in the film.

Gangster: American GangsterAmerican Gangster falls under the Gangster genre, the story line is based on a true story in New York, Manhattan. It is about a group of gangsters smuggling drugs into the country; starring Denzel Washington. This film is mainly targeted at young adults and older due to the violence and drug scenes. This fits well into a Gangster genre due to the mise en scene, the props such as guns, money and cars are effective as they represent the gangsters. The soundtrack also goes well with the pace of the shots and setting. The low angle shot suggests superiority and the close up shots suggest some parts of the film are tense. The titles are effective as they draw in the audiences attention as they show the name of actors, directors and prizes won for the film, it also shows 'based on a true story' which could also draw in audiences attention. The pace throughout the trailer changes, it cross cuts from different scenes giving the audience an insight into the story line. The cuts are also fast pace giving a glimpse of the gangster lifestyle. Special effects such as gun shootings and explosions are also used to show the danger and drama in the film. The voice over is especially effective 'you either somebody or nobody' this tells the audience superiority is key in this film. It also highlights 'bribery, extortion, murder, family, trust' this is effective as it reflects the Gangsters and fits within the genre.

|
Western: Django UnchainedDjango Unchained is a Western film focusing on how black slavery was realistically dealt in the Southern States during the the 18th Century. This film is a hybrid of genres as it includes comedy as well as drama, it is targeted to an older audience; mainly adults. This Quentin Tarantino film is very stylistic, this is shown in the trailer, it shows a lot of violence and shootings using guns, the music also fits in with the genre. The range of shots are also effective as it suggests there is a lot going on in this film, for example establishing shots are used to show the audience what era it is set in and the location. Close ups, mid shots, reaction shots and long shots are also used to emphasise the amount of drama and action taking place in this film. The pace also builds up in this trailer it starts of slow and then cross cuts to different scenes making the story line seem exciting. The voice over is also effective 'let freedom rain' this gives the audience an insight on the story line. The titles highlights the release date of the film, this is effective as it tells the audience it is released at Christmas, this can draw in more viewers as people may watch it around this festive season.

|
Drama/Romance: The NotebookThe Notebook is an Romantic/Drama based on a love story being retold to a lady with Alzheimers by her husband. This film is mainly targeted to women, young adults and couples. This trailer fits well within the Romantic genre as the soundtrack used it slow and light hearted followed by slow cut scenes, the rest of the pace of the trailer continues with slow dissolves and cross cuts between the old couple and young couple, this is effective as it makes the trailer flow well and it also targets an older audience showing famous older actors. The trailer shows the film is set in a beautiful town in the country making the setting very picturesque and drawing in viewers this is shown using establishing shots. The titles inform the audience the film is based on a novel, this draws in fans who have read the book. The voice over is effective as it is the old man telling the story
'magical' and 'they fell in love didn't they' suggests the story line is going to involve romance. |
|
Action/Thriller: World War ZWorld War Z is an Action/Thriller set in New York. The story line is based in the future about a zombie invasion. This is shown in the trailer by the range of shots. A long shot is used to show the number of zombies taking over the city, this is shown using CGI to emphasise the big scale of zombies. Followed by establishing shots these are effective as they show the audience New York in an invasion. This film is mainly targeted to horror/zombie fans and fans of Brad Pitt as they focus on him in the trailer as the hero. The soundtrack is effective as it builds up with the drama in the trailer. The sound of sirens and helicopters suggest drama and danger. The titles of this film are created using green screen, they inform the audience the release date, website, actors names and the name of the film at the end. This is effective as the name of film will remain in the audiences mind. The pace of the trailer starts slow and eventually speeds up to the action and adventure, throughout the enigma code is used keeping audiences drawn in and interest. The dialogue used builds up suspense 'I'm scared' and 'What is going on' 'We getting out of here', this suggests the story line involves danger. The range of special effects used through out also add to the high budget action/thriller as explosions and CGI are used for dramatic effect.

Evaluation
Although these trailers are from different genres and unique from one another, I had an idea of the key elements I would need to include in a teaser trailer. I established what makes a teaser trailer different from a theatrical trailer- they are much more gripping, intense and eye-catching. This will be challenging however using a range of creative shots and giving an insight into the storyline will make my own teaser sucessful. However each genre had a unique set of conventions, in order to make my trailer fit well within my chosen genre I would have to follow these. Looking at these trailers were helpful as it gave me inspiration and a wide look into previous teaser trailers.
Aueteur: A filmmaker, usually a director, who exercises creative control over his or her works and has a strong personal style.
Genre: Horror
After choosing to do my trailer under the horror genre, I started to research sub genres to narrow down my idea and learn the conventions of different types of horror films. The following sub genres included B Movies, Japanese Horror, Teen, and Gothic Horror. I learnt there was a lot more types of horror than I thought, and each one follows completely different conventions and over the years horror films have changed immensely.
B Movies
B Movies are a low budget motion picture which were originally used in The Golden Age of Hollywood. Examples of B Movies are Evil Dead, Sharktopus, Bad Taste, Citizen Toxic and The Toxic Avenger.
Evil Dead is a B Movie made in 1981 directed by Sam Raimi. The conventions of a B Movie follow obvious, over the top blood and gore. For example the horrific protagonist portrayed in the trailer is shown as a close up of blood spilling out of his neck, this is also shown with the prop of an axe and blood sprayed all over it. Voice overs and dialogue is also used, this is effective as it gives an insight of the story line. I also liked how the screen was blank as the voice over was running to grab audiences attention. Repetitive camera shots were used in this trailer, for example Point of view shots to show the audience the action taking place and reaction shots to emphasise the gore and horror. As well as that a lot of close ups are used to show the characters expressions, this is effective as it shows the suspense in the film. It also identifies the victims and the killer. The lighting used through out the trailer is very dark and at times making it hard to see what is going on, this could be due to the time it was made in and the quality of camera, however it looks effective as it makes it seem realistic. The sound used in the trailer fits within the horror genre as screams are used to exaggerate the horror, this is by the young girl in the trailer, she is portrayed as the vulnerable 'damsel in distress' and the male in the trailer seems to try and be the 'hero'. An emphasis on the breathing of the killer is also used to dramatise the action taking place. At the end a typical convention of a B Movie is the bold font used for the Title, and the zoom in effect onto the title. |
Japanese Horror
Japanese horror tends to focus on psychological horror and tension building, particularly involving ghosts and poltergeists, while many contain themes of folk religion such as: possession, exorcism, shamanism, precognition, and yōkai. Examples of these horror films are The Ring, Carved, One Missed Call and The Grudge. Ringu was made in 1998 directed by Hideo Nakata. This trailer follows the conventions of Japanese horror, for example the main killer is a young girl with long black hair with intentions to haunt or kill. Although this film is Japanese it follows similar conventions to Hollywood for example the titles show the release date and film name. The sounds used in the trailer are effective for example the thunder sets and atmosphere to the film and the screams exaggerate the suspense. The ringing phone is also a typical prop and sound used in a horror film as it creates the suspense of who is on the other line. The special effects used through out the trailer also add to the horror effect. For example the flashes and screen static effect add to the tension in the trailer, it also gives us an insight on the narrative that a TV is a dominant part of the story. The effects used on top of the scenes to make them look like they are from TV are also effective as it makes them look old and scarier. The Japanese writing is also a convention as it appeals to the japanese audience only. The pace through out the film is very fast, this creates big suspense and I think this is ideal for a teaser trailer as a lot is going, therefore captures the audiences full attention and gives them an idea of the narrative of the film.

Teen Horror
Teen-Horror is a sub-genre that revolves around a teenager or a group of teenagers. Typically, these movies have a large cast and a clear hero or heroine. Teen-Horror films often involve traditional teenage issues, such as dating and prom, and turn them into suspenseful and thrilling situations. For example I Know What You Did Last Summer, Final Destination, Jennifer's Body and House Of Wax.
Final Destination is a movie which has turned into a sequel of films. This film is one of the most common teen horrors. It is set in the US in a school, the characters involve a young boy, love interest and 'damsel in distress' these all cover the conventions of Hollywoods Teen Horror films. In this trailer the opening music is very dramatic; this draws in the audiences attention straight away. Following this on the screen are big explosions; this can attract a young male audience as they like 'fire and explosions'. The close up of the teenage boys face is effective as we establish he is a main character; this could appeal to the female audience as they may be fans of him. A birds eye view shot is also used this is effective as we can see the panic and danger taking place in the scene, this fits within the horror conventions as there people are fighting for their lifes. The inter titles are effective as you can get an idea of the storyline. The music then slows down, this is complimented by the editing as slow flashes are show and inter cuts of a man in danger in the bath tub- this helps build up the tension of the trailer and keeps audiences interested. The voice over is also effective as you can understand the different characters intentions. |
Gothic Horror
Gothic horror, is a genre or mode of literature that combines elements of both horror and romance. The name Gothic refers to the medieval buildings in which many of these stories take place. This extreme form of romanticism was very popular in England and Germany. Example of these films include Nosferatu, Dracula, Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow and The Phantom Of The Opera.
Dracula trailer fits within the conventions of Gothic Horror as it's extremely dark. The antagonist is fictional vampire which is associated with blood and horror. The setting and props also suit this genre, for example the setting is in a dark building which almost looks like a castle- medieval building. The trailer also shows a grave yard, this connotes death/ghosts/spirits. The story line between the antagonist features a damsel in distress; this typically follows the conventions of a Hollywood Film; the women is referred to as 'innocent' and is shown as young and beautiful. The lighting throughout the trailer is also very dark, and the vampire is kept in the shadows. This lighting suggests the antagonist comes out only at night. The soundtrack sets an intense atmosphere, it slowly builds up and makes the trailer seem creepy, it highlights the vampire is a well disguises antagonist. Gothic horror is unique as it has such strong conventions, such as vampires, castles, graveyards therefore would be hard to replicate a unique style. |
Mask HorrorMask horrors are based around an antagonist wearing an unusual mask, and remaining there identity hidden throughout in order for them to commit crimes such as killings. Examples of this are Smiley, Scream, Saw and Freddy Kreuger. In this Smiley trailer his mask is the focal point, this is shown through quick close ups and mid-shots of the antagonist- Smiley. This is effective as it keeps his character a mystery to the audience. The mask is also unappealing this is a convention of Mask horrors as the mask is unique and gruesome. The blood used on the mask as if it is real wounds is effective as it is flesh colour and similar to human skin.
Intertitles are used throughout to establish the storyline of the film, the colour of the font is red this also conntoes gore and blood suggesting this film contains a lot of killings- as this is the main motive of the antagonist. The lighting is continuously dark, this is a typical convention of horror films as the killer is only meant to come in the dark. In particular the shot of the mask on the floor is effective as it suggests in the story the killer is going to be revealed. Mask horrors are effective as the antagonist is the selling point of the film and everyone is intrigued to watch it to find out who the man behind the mask is. |
Previous Trailers
I then started to look at teasers made by the previous year, I analysed three trailers to give me an example of what I could produce for my own trailer. This was useful as they gave me an initial idea and inspiration, these trailers were more realistic to what I can do for my own. Here are the following trailers I analysed:
Momentum
|
This trailer also fitted within the sci fi/action genre, it appealed to me because of the mise en scene, this helped us understand the mise en scene is extremely important when making our own trailer, the lab was ideal for this genre and set a storyline straight away. The tilt shot of The Gherkin building also showed us that it was set in London, this was effective as the shot was unusual and suggested the storyline is based around someone who is superior. The costumes also were effective as you could see the scientist was a superior character therefore the story is based around him. I also liked the use of dialogue in the trailer as the one liners were more effective than a full conversation for example the actors say 'how many can you make, how many do you need?' The range of shots used also built up the pace of the trailer creating a lot of suspense which fitted perfectly within the action genre, this helped us understand following the conventions of your genre are important. |

We looked at this trailer as it was within the horror genre, and this was the genre we were most interested in doing for our own. I liked this trailer because of the range of shots used, for example they used close ups, long shots, point of view and low angle shots to disorientate the viewer this is effective as it makes the trailer more eye catching and builds up the suspense this fitted perfectly within the horror genre. I also liked the special effects used for this trailer, for example the flashes used through out made the trailer more scary, this inspired us to include flashes in some parts of our opening to shock the audience and keep them interested. The overlay effect used in this trailer is also effective as it gives the imagery of what is going on in the protagonist head, this gives us an insight on what the character is thinking and her background. This trailer also shows titles through out, this seems to help build up the suspense too, and gives us an idea of the storyline, I like the idea of having titles for our trailer as it is a common theme in the horror/thriller genre. |

This trailer fits within the sci fi/action genre. It appealed to our group as we liked the storyline as it inspired us for our own, for example the way it is set in the future and the world has come to dystopia. One of the key shots that stood out to us were the titles that were shown through out the trailer which gave us an idea of what there movie was about. We thought this would be effective to use in our trailer as it builds up the storyline and creates suspense. This trailer is also effective as they have taken the mise en scene into consideration, the location, costumes, lighting and props have all been well thought out. For example the scene of Big Ben is effective as it gives us an idea where the movie is set, and the forensic suits fit within the sci fi genre. It also has a horror element to the film for example the big skull at the end suggests danger, and the fake contacts used on the actor made the trailer more realistic. We liked the idea of the trailer being a hybrid of genres, and the title of the film not being an obvious name, this is similar to the name of our trailer 024.

Group
As a group of four (Anas, Tyrone, Yayra and Myself) we were all interested in the horror genre and we started to combine our ideas, we came up with a few ideas before we knew what direction we were going in, our most common idea was to look at slasher horrors , this developed into two different ideas. We looked at previous slasher horror trailers to get inspiration and ideas and started to develop our narrative.
Slasher Horror: Slasher film is a sub-genre of Horror film that revolves around a psychopathic killer. This killer stalks and murders his victims in extremely violent and memorable ways. Though it centers on a specific killer, the violence is what sets Slasher films apart from other horror films. A Slasher film will devote more screen time to portray murder and mayhem than a traditional Horror film. For example Freddy Kruger, My Bloddy Valentine, and Halloween. These films helped us develop our story lines as they were all based around one killer, this inspired us to have our trailer based around one main killer and follow his killings throughout. We liked the idea of our main killer to have a mask or something significant so he is memorable to the audience, for example Smiley is famous for his disfigured mask and Freddy Kruger is famous for his hat and burnt face. We started to take into consideration of the props we may need and costume.
First Idea: Our first idea was based around a teen horror/slasher. We wanted to set our film in a high school around Halloween. The protagonist was a boy who used to get bullied and on the night of Halloween disguises himself with a horrific pumpkin mask and slowly kills his classmates one by one. We thought this would be ideal to shoot as we are all within that age group therefore our actors would suit there roles. We also have the advantage of being in a school therefore our location spot would be perfect. However as we started to develop this further we thought our story line was not original enough and we got feedback from others and they thought it was not interesting or unique. Therefore, we decided not to follow through with this idea.
Official Idea: Our second idea developed into a story line much more complex, we decided on our trailer to be a hybrid of genres, therefore we could include more conventions in our trailer. We continued to base our story line around one main killer 'The Piggy Banker' who is getting revenge on the upper class. It is set in the future 2024, and the world is at an economic crisis. We wanted our narrative to be a battle of Dystopia vs Eutopia, and show a distinct contrast between the rich and the poor. We looked at these following trailers and were heavily inspired by the camera work and narratives of each of these films. These films fall under a combination of genres therefore our trailer is going to be a hybrid of Political Horror/Action/Thriller.

Inspiration
The Purge
|
The Purge was made in 2013, directed by James DeMonaco. This film inspired us with the unique shots used in this film and by the interesting narrative. The film is set in the year 2022 when the United States has become "a nation reborn", with crime and unemployment rates hitting an all-time low, due to the government having instituted an annual 12-hour period called "the Purge" during which all criminal activity becomes legal. We liked the idea of the film being set in the future and giving audiences a conception of what life may be like. The trailer includes lots of fast pace action, I liked how the trailer begun slowly and gradually the pace sped up, it was then slowed down again right at the end when the female is being stalked by one of the antagonists this is effective as it builds up suspense in the trailer and reveals who is the 'vulnerable victims'. The soundtrack used in this trailer is effective as it is the sound of the American anthem, this links in with the narrative and suggests the story line reflects the way in which society is going. We also liked how the narrative was linked to the government and society as a whole, this inspired us to base our story around the British Government and banks.
|
Elysium |
Elysium is another current film made in 2013, directed by Neill Blomkamp. This film was on of our biggest inspirations for our trailer as our narratives were similar, it wasn't until after we came up with our idea in that we discovered this trailer as it was released during the Summer, this helped us develop and expand our ideas. It is also set in the future, in 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a luxurious space station called Elysium and the poor, who live on a devastated Earth. While residents on Earth are policed by ruthless robots, Elysian citizens live in comfort and regularly use man-sized medical devices called Med-Bays to keep them free of disease and injury. We liked this idea of Dystopia vs Eutopia and we wanted to also show this between the division of two classes, the upper class (rich bankers) and the lower class. This trailer is effective due to their props of machinery guns and setting to make it look more futuristic, as we are limited on a budget we have to improvise but take into consideration on how to also make our trailer look futuristic so it fits within the story line. The soundtrack is also very effective as it helps build up the suspense and action taking place. |
The Town |
The Town was made in 2010, directed by Ben Afleck. It is based in Boston, United States, around a gang of boys who have been passed down generation after generation as bank robbers. This trailer inspired us as we are looking at a trailer which involves The Piggy Banker who is going to rob and kill the banks and the main people in charge of the banks in London dressed with a scary mask. This film throughout uses several masks as they commit the bank robberies, we thought this was effective as it makes them look threatening and superior. Furthermore, this trailer appealed to us as it was set in a city, similarly to ours being set in London. We also thought the props the robbers used were effective for example the guns they carried in gave them superior power over the banks, this made us take into consideration what we should use to make our Piggy Banker seem more threatening to the audience. This trailer stood out to us because although it is an action film, the soundtrack used was quite slow and the pace of the editing sped up towards the end, this effectively helped build up the story line in the trailer and also build up suspense and action taking place. |
Production & Distribution
We researched several production and distribution companies which would suit to fund and market our film. I looked at companies which had been involved in making previous Action/Thriller Horrors, this would draw in a familiar audience. We also wanted to look at mainstream, well known companies as our film ideally would be a big budget as it is set in the future, we would want a lot to be put into effects and locations, this is a typical convention of most Action films to be on a big scale budget. We looked at the companies most commonly used in big Hollywood blockbusters as these would suit our trailer, they have previously been involved in horror/actions and thrillers.
Production
Legendary Pictures, is an American film production company based in California. It is renown for producing big blockbuster films such as Pacific Rim, ,Dark Knight Man of Steel, and The Town. Most of these fall in the Thriller/Horror genre, therefore would suit our narrative. The Town in particular has a similar storyline to ours therefore Legendary Pictures would suit our trailer. This is a powerful studio company in Hollywood and produces big budget films, we were aiming our film to be a big budget film. Most of the films produced by Legendary Pictures attract a similar audience. Targeting 15+years, this would be appropriate to use for our trailer as we are targeting a same audience, therefore they would be more familiar with the production company and would be interested in watching the film. |
Warner Bros is a well known Hollywood distribution and production company.
It produced Inception. This movie was budgeted at an outstanding $160,000,000, and starred A-List actor Leonardo DiCaprio, as we are looking at a big budet film too this suited our trailer. This powerful Hollywood studio owns several other companies including Warner Bros Studios, Warner Bros Television, Warner Bros Animation, New Line Cinema and DC Entertainment. Other movies produced by Warner Bros Entertainment include The Matrix Reloaded, Terminator 3, Oceans Twelve, Constantine, Blood Diamond and The Dark Knight: These movies fall under the genre of action/thriller/horror therefore we think similar audiences would be appealed to our trailer. This production company stood out to me as we are looking to film a big Hollywood movie and this production company produces movies with a similar audience with similar genres. |
Distribution
Universal is a production company as well as distribution company, it is one of the six major movie studios in Hollywood. Universal produced/distrbuted the following films; Snow White and The Huntsmen, Safehouse, The Bourne Legacy, Zero Dark Thirty, The Purge and Les Miserables. These are big budget films following dark/thriller storylines. We thought our trailer 024 would attract a similar audience, as most of these films are targetted at both men and women who enjoy big budget action/thriller/horror. In particular we were looking at The Purge which was distributed by Universal, similarly our storylines are about society, and how it can potentially become. As our storylines are so similar we thought the same audiences would be interested in our film, therefore universal would be ideal to use for our own trailer.
|
Village Roadshow Pictures is a leading independent co-producer and co-financier of major Hollywood motion pictures, they self-distributes its filmed entertainment through affiliates in several territories around the world, including Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. They have produced/distributed the following films The Matrix, Oceans Twelve, Constantine, I Am Legend and The Great Gatsby. Once again these are all big budget Hollywood films, therefore attract a wide audience. In particual I Am Legend is most similar to our film 024 as it is about how society can potentially become in the future. The story is set in New York, and the protagonist is left whilst everyone else has died of an uncurable illness. This is similar to ours in the way we look at how society is going to change from now; we show the higher class and lower class at a complete division and therefore our anti-hero is trying to save them. Therefore. this distribution would suit our trailer as it would draw in familiar audiences who are interested in a similar genre and narrative as 024.
|
Outcome: Legendary Pictures & Universal
We came to the agreement as a group to make Legendary Pictures as our Production company and Universal as our Distribution company for our trailer.
