Survey Monkey
Although we had in mind who our target audience were after researching other movies within the genre, we created a Questionnaire on Survey Monkey to clarify our audience and who we were specifically targeting our opening too. Our aim was to find out who would enjoy watching Physchological Thrillers: age groups, gender etc. We had an idea of what we wanted to include in our thriller and wanted feed back from these ideas this would help us know what our target audience would want from an opening; we wanted to successfully narrow down our audience to know what would appeal to them the most.
We set this question to find out what sort of age group are answering our questions; therefore which age group is interested in our Psychological Thriller opening. Looking at our results, the dominate age group that took our Questionnaire were from 13-24 years old; this gave us an idea of what kind of age group are interested in Pychological Thrillers. Most of the films we looked at were aimed for 15+ or 18+ therefore I think our opening should be for an older audience at 18+. Even though we are missing out on the age group 13-17, at 18+ we are able to include more blood and gore in our opening. |
This shows mainly males took our questionnaire therefore are answers are most appealing to a male audience. The women count is only 10% behind suggesting they are interested to however our dominant audience is young adult males. This means our opening can be targeted at both men and women however it's main focus is males. |
This question was set to narrow down what type of group of people we were targeting; from our feed back this shows mainly friends go to the cinema together. This suggests our film is targeted to friendship groups; this could influence our opening making it more relatable to our audience by including different characters with stereotypical personalities; e.g 'baddie', 'goodie' |
We asked this question so we knew what we should focus on in our opening; we wanted to know what to include in our opening to please our audience. From our feedback it shows the most popular result being 'shocking' at 36% which interests audiences the most in the opening of a movie, this is followed by 'unusual' 27% and 'cliff hanger'. This is helpful as it gives us an idea of what we should include; we should include something dramatic that will scare the audience and be unusual or off-putting. |
This question was ideal for our genre- Psychological Thriller. We wanted to see if the audiences answering the questionnaire would enjoy the suspense in this genre. From our feed back 100% of people answered yes, therefore in our opening we should try and include as much suspense as possible and make our audience want to continue watching. |
This question shows the audience answering the questions (13-24year old) males and females are all interested in Psychological Thrillers, therefore they would be an ideal target audience. This question is followed by reasons why they enjoy this genre; these results show they are most interested in the suspense (72%) once again, this seems to be a big demand in psychological thrillers therefore our opening should heavily include suspense. It also shows killings (36%) and special effects (36%) are popular too, therefore our storyline could involve a murderer or a death. It also shows effects are popular, from the openings we watched effects are also used these both have inspired me to use effects in my opening to build up tension and make it seem more dramatic. |
This question was set to see how light determines our audiences mood, as we are making a Psychological Thriller we thought it was suitable to use dark lighting to fit in with the conventions of the genre, however we wanted to see how audiences would react to this. As a result it shows dark lighting creates an intense atmosphere, this is successful as it will help build up the suspense in our opening. |
This question was set to find out what sort of sound we should include to help build up the tension in the opening. From our results it shows no sound (63%) creates the most tension, this suggests in our opening we should include no sound leading towards a build up of a murder. It also shows non diagetic sound was popular (27%) this suggests sound effects used on top will help build up tension for example creeks of doors or emphasised sounds to dramatise the movement of the actor. |
Conclusion
In conclusion, the results from the Questionnaire show that our opening is targeted at a mainly male dominated group however it also would appeal to females too, the age range from 13-24 shows that these results are most popular within this age range, this shows they all enjoy psychological thrillers; we decided to narrow down this age group to 18+ as from the rest of the feedback it shows audiences are interested in killings and suspense, to allow this we decided to target an older audience. The results also tell us our audiences are interested in a big suspense and something unusual therefore we are aiming to create our opening which is quite gruesome and sinister as we think this would make our movie unusual. To help create this big suspense the results show dark lighting would create an intense atmosphere therefore in our opening we should make it dark lit to help build up this suspense, as well as that it shows no sound would help build this up too. This Questionnaire has been successful as we were able to target our particular audience and know what we should include in our opening.
